The CHAIR APPROVED STANDARD, as submitted to The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), is now available to you. Get your copy here.

The Butchery Apprenticeship Standard was submitted to BIS on Friday 20th July, supported by 11 letters of support from employers and from the IoM.

This is currently being reviewed by an independent panel appointed by BIS.

From there the Standard and High Level Assessment approach document will be go to Minister Hancock for final approval and hopefully publication on 19th July.

Did you know that IFST - supported by Warburtons, Waitrose and FTC - are soon to launch a brand new, free website designed to help young people start their careers in the food industry? The website will enable food industry employers to connect with those looking for work experience and internship opportunities within the food industry.

In order to begin addressing one of the major challenges facing the food sector, ie. the fact that insufficient numbers of new talent are currently joining our industry, IFST is planning to launch FoodStart. A project designed to help the next generation of food professionals take their first steps into a career in food.

Following an inspection of Food Apprenticeships and English Language courses at the Centre, Ofsted inspectors concluded that “employers value highly the very good training their employees receive, which is designed carefully to meet the very specific needs of their businesses; excellent partnerships with a wide range of employers are at the heart of this successful provision.”

All training providers operating within the employment and skills sector have to establish management and governance arrangements that are appropriate for their businesses, and meet the requirements of their funders and customers.

The results of the butchery apprenticeship trailblazer consultation, which took place in May 2014 are now available.

As part of this the trailblazing employer group held a consultation - with secretariat support provided by the food and drink training and education council (ftc) - which enabled the sector to review and comment on the proposed standard via a survey.

We are pleased to announce that we have now approved Verner Wheelock's full suite of auditing training programmes.

FDQ centre Verner Wheelock is now running courses both in their own premises or within client businesses.

These programmes include: 

  • FDQ Auditing Skills Certificate
  • FDQ Supplier Auditing Certificate
  • FDQ Lead Auditor Certificate

Cleaning, logistics and warehousing qualifications extended

We would like to notify all FDQ centres approved to deliver cleaning, warehousing and logistics qualifications, that these have now been extended until 2017.

Qualifications affected include:


1. FDQ Level 1 Certificate in Cleaning and Support Services Skills (QCF) 500/8790/3 Extended until 31.07.2017

2. FDQ Level 2 Certificate in Cleaning & Support Services Skills (QCF)
500/9310/1 Extended until 31.07.2017

Extended until 31.07.2017

Black Sheep Brewery takes on brewing apprentices

Black Sheep Brewery has recently announced they are working with FDQ centre Askham Bryan to train and develop their first brewing apprentices.

The Masham-based brewer has taken on Nicholas Norris, 22 and Joshua Lacey, 19 both from the area. The young apprentices are studying for the FDQ level 2 Diploma for Proficiency in Brewing Industry Skills as part of their 18 month apprenticeship programme.

The apprenticeship is essentially a package of work related learning, including qualifications which will enable the learner to build both workplace skills and knowledge. This will ensure that the new Black Sheep apprentices are thoroughly trained via on and off the job training.

At the recent AELP conference the Skills Minister, Matthew Hancock, celebrated the apprenticeship successes and painted a detailed and positive picture of the future of the 'world class' programmes in this country.

Highlights of the speech included:

  • a pledge to continue backing apprenticeships to ensure they become the first choice for businesses, professions and employers to train their next generation of staff
  • a promise to drive up quality and rid the system of poor implementation
  • a new funding system piloted soon via trailblazers - for every £1 an employer puts into training an apprentice, the government will provide £2
  • confirmation of a 50% rise in apprenticeships
  • statement that there are more people in apprenticeships in thsi country, working for more employers and more sectors than ever
  • news that 95% of apprenticeship employers report improved productivity, improved staff morale, and streamlined recruitment
  • a pledge for funding 20,000 more higher apprenticeships
  • providing £20,000 million for degree level apprenticeships
  • a promise to drive up quality and rid the system of poor implementation
